While attending the recent
Public Library Association conference in Minneapolis, I got to hear a presentation by audiobook narrator
Scott Brick. If you are an audiobook fan like I am you probably recognize his name as one of the "
golden voices" of the audiobook world. I have enjoyed his voice while listening to numerous books such as Terry Brooks'
Shannara series. It was sort of weird to hear the same voice coming out of an actual person in front of me! Scott even did a demonstration of the process he uses when recording, getting out his water, teabag, chapstick, and throat drops that he uses to keep his voice fresh. He then read an excerpt from
The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga. He said he could readily identify with the young boy in this book who is crazy about comic books--the same way Scott was when he was that age.
Scott had just finished recording the latest book from W.E.B. Griffin,
Death and Honor. After the conference he said he plans to start work on
Lord Foul's Bane by Stephen Donaldson, a book he loves so much that he bought the audio rights to it so he could record it. Scott has already recorded some of the later books in Donaldson's series, but he wants to fill in the gaps by recording the earlier books. One of the reasons he is so passionate about this project is that Lord Foul's Bane contains one of his favorite quotations: "A life without a story is like a sea without salt".
Scott said that when he is narrating a book he works hard to convey the author's passion. He says that he can't read even non-fiction like he was reading the news. Once he was asked what his mission statement is for his life. He replied "I want to tell stories that make children dream".
