Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
On Thursday, October 30th, 4-6 pm, the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library hosts the AT&T Grand Opening of a new center dedicated to teen (12-18) library users. AT&T, the Real Yellow Pages, is the sponsor of our grand opening event. Teens attending Thursday’s opening have the chance to win two $250 gift certificates to AT&T Mobile. Other giveaways will be provided until they are gone.
The new center is the result of the library’s organizational priorities and addresses the increased library use by this population. Library staff worked with teen focus groups to identify what is important to them, the décor of the room, programs, and activities. Teens have also named the new center, which will be revealed at the opening event.
This area is a pilot program and is an interactive library resource: a place to meet with friends, play games, read, study, use the computers, watch movies, and listen to music. It also complements the current teen area, David J’s Place, which has often exceeded capacity after-school and on weekends. With the opening of the new area, David J’s will become a quieter area for those who want to read and study.
The teen center will also have new program venues, including live performances by garage bands, Guitar Hero competitions and crazy karaoke. There is a gaming area and comfy seating for casual conversations. The area is designated for use by 12-18 year olds only. Hours of service will be M-F, 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm; Sat, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm ; and Sun, noon to 9:00 pm.
