Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library

6 reasons to sign up for a library card

image

Anytime is a great time to sign up for a library card, but this month us library geeks will be offering you an invitation to see firsthand what a library card can do for you.

From 2 to 4 p.m. each Tuesday in September, library staff will be demonstrating resources and services ranging from how to form your own book group to how to get first dibs at the popular Friends of the Library Book Sale.

Visitors can also learn how much money they can save by using their library card by visiting the demo booth or checking out our library calculator online. Not only is the library saving people money, it's saving the environment with its borrowing practices, said Brad Allen, adult services supervisor.

"The library has always been a leader in ‘green' practices," Allen said. "When you use your library card not only do you have access to more books, music, movies and video games, you also are investing in the future. By coming together to use this shared resource, we all benefit."

Today, 118,000 library cardholders consider the library their place. People sign up for a library card every day. In September, we want even more to sign up for this valued card.

If you need more reasons than those above, consider these benefits offered only to cardholders:

  1. The library is like a bookstore, but without the price tags. You don't have to buy books, movies and video games when you can check them out with a free library card.
  2. The library offers free computer and internet access.
  3. Access digital audiobooks, e-books, music and video on your portable media player or computer.
  4. Reserve a study room and use the copy machines.
  5. Receive email newsletters about the cool things happening at the library.
  6. Your library card is your passport to Consumer Reports online and a myriad of other publications. Visit www.tscpl.org/research, click on Databases A-Z and click Master File Premier to read Consumer Reports. You can also find auto repair information for your late model car, truck or van under Auto Repair Reference Center.

Library hours are 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday and 12-9 p.m. Sunday.
