Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library

Services

Starting Service

As Talking Books is a federally funded service, readers must complete an Application for Free Library Service.  The application needs to be certified by an accepted authority such as a medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, optometrist, nurse, home health worker, social worker or others.  In the case of a reading disability, an M.D. or D.O. must certify the Application for Service.

Note:  We cannot accept return applications for service via fax. Talking Books staff can fax a blank application form, but an original signature must appear on the certified application and it must be on file before service begins.

Applications for Service are processed in 3-5 business days in the order received.

Donating to TSCPL Talking Books

If you would like to make a donation, memorial contribution or give an in-kind gift, please call (785) 580-4530 or by sending a message via our mail form. Outside support allows us to offer quality programs and services to over 2,000 blind, visually impaired or physically handicapped adults and children every year. Donations provide funding for projects and services not included in our annual operating budget such as a Children's Summer Reading Program and Braille Services & Technology. We acknowledge each donation as quickly as possible so that you know your gift will be used toward the advancement of Talking Book services. Donations to TSCPL Talking Books are tax deductible as the law allows.

Costs

Like services you receive from your local public library, services for the blind and physically handicapped have no user fees. The Talking Book program is funded jointly by federal, state and local tax dollars. All materials are loaned to readers at no charge. No postage is necessary to mail library materials to and from TSCPL Talking Books via the U.S. Mail.

Talking Book players are repaired here at the library by the Telecom Pioneers of America, members of a nationwide volunteer organization of retired telecommunications employees.
